Friday Film: “Split”

I was on my way for a drink the other night and my best friend texted me asking which movie I told her five months ago that she should absolutely watch. When I read the word “absolutely” I immediately remembered which movie I was talking to her about and that gave me the idea to start with this movie as one of my favorite movies that you must watch immediately.

If you are looking for a movie to watch with friends this weekend and if you haven’t watched it yet, this is it. “Split” is a horror movie directed and written by M. Night Shyamalan who was also the creator of the epic mystery movie of 2000 “Unbreakable” starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson.

The film stars James McAvoy who kidnaps Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy), Claire (Hayley Lu Richardson) and Marcia (Jessica Sula) and locks them in a room inside his house. While the girls start to realize that there is no way out and that they have to figure out how to escape, they meet their kidnapper and his amazing twenty-three personalities.

“Split” is a brilliant movie and James McAvoy couldn’t be more suited for this role as he delivers so many different characters in just one movie and he does it to the point that you can’t decide if you want to sympathize with him or if you want to see him dead or inside a mental institution. Anya Taylor-Joy is the only one among the girls that is smart enough to figure out a way for them to escape or at least try and you can really relate to her and think what you will do if you ever found yourself in a situation like that.

The film has you on pins and needles for the whole two hours and it makes you feel like you are in there experiencing the same dead end as the girls do. And while all the personalities start to unravel, you begin to realize that this is going to either end good or end really bad because there is no way you can actually know which personality is going to surface every time you meet him. And when I say meet, I mean it literally because you will get introduced to his character more than once and trust me, you won’t get disappointed with either one of them.

The plot is something different than you are used to minding the horror movies that we’ve already watched and it evolves really great up to the point where in the end you realize that what you just watched wasn’t what you expected it to be and I mean it in the good way. And speaking about the ending, you will get a bonus scene after the movie ends that is going to blow your mind even more, especially if you had actually watched “Unbreakable” in the past or if you are a fan of M. Night Shyamalan.

While other horror movies try really hard to make the perfect jump-scares or the perfect mind blown endings, this movie has no unnecessary jump-scares or any way to scare you through disturbing images and shots. It simply terrifies you with just the development of the characters and with the need you feel about the justice that should be made in order for you to find the piece of mind that you are looking for throughout the movie.

If you are a fan of horror movies, this movie is a must. The characters are well-written, the plot is innovative, the atmosphere gives you goose bumps and the actors are delivering their best performances so far.

What are you still doing here? Go watch it now!

I’ll be back next Friday with another one of my favorite movies that you must watch.

Until then, leave your comments below and let us know what your thoughts on this movie are and if you enjoyed watching it.
