“Friday Film: “The Invisible Guest”

While on vacation I happened to watch this crime/mystery film that immediately entered my “favorite movies” list without even a second thought. It’s one of those films which leave you shocked and with a satisfying feeling for the justice that had been served in the end.

The Spanish film “Contratiempo” a.k.a. “The Invisible Guest” is Oriol Paolo’s 2016 movie who is also known for his work in Los Ojos De Julia” a.k.a. “Julia’s Eyes” and “The body”. If you are familiar with his previous work you already know that “The Invisible Guest” is a must-watch movie because this time not only did Oriol Paolo write the movie’s script but he also directed it and the result is simply magnificent.

“The Invisible Guest” stars Adrián Doria (Mario Casas), a wealthy businessman who was recently named Man of The Year as a result of his successful agreements that led his company to enter the Asian market and Virginia Goodman (Ana Wagener), a veteran successful lawyer introduced to Adrián in order to prepare him for a trial in which he is being accused of murdering his lover Laura Vidal (Bárbara Lennie). The story unravels through Adrián’s and Virginia’s discussion about the events that took place before Laura’s murder.

Imagine waking up in a locked hotel room alongside your lover’s dead body. What would you do to prove your innocence? And who could have entered the room and murder her and how did he get in a locked from the inside room in the first place? These are some of the questions that make this crime story interesting, challenging, difficult to solve and worth to watch. The mystery around the whole case and the dead end that Adrián is facing are two of the many reasons I loved this movie from its beginning to its end.

The interchange between the flashbacks and the present time is what keeps the viewers interest intact and triggered throughout the storyline. The narration of Adrián is the most crucial thing in solving the case and defending him at the same time and the events that took place before the murder of Laura matter the most. And while you might think you already know the answer to the mystery, think again. Because this isn’t a crime story like any other and everything can happen.

The characters are the ones who keep the movie from remaining a simple crime movie. Mario Casas is completely into his role of a guy who is very wealthy but unfortunate at the same time since the incidents that he had experienced can cause him his freedom. Bárbara Lennie portrays an intelligent woman, ready to get what she wants and willing to do anything to achieve that. And last but not least is Ana Wagener who plays a strong and successful lawyer who wants to protect her client but need his whole commitment and full disclosure on the true events that went on in his life.

“The Invisible Guest” knows exactly how to keep you on pins and needles the whole time and successfully manages to bring you a perfect murder case through the unique interaction between a suspect and his lawyer. It centers on a specific crime with a specific history behind it that only the person who committed it can truly know the full story. But who is this person? And is that person going to pay the price for what he/she had done?

If you are a crime story lover this movie is made for you. And if you want to know the answers to all the questions above, suit yourself by checking out “The Invisible Guest” and prepare for a mind-blowing murder story that will completely turn all your expectations upside down.

I’ll be back next Friday with another one of my favorite movies that you must watch.
