Are you tired of the cliché shark movies with the unreasonably numerous deaths and the more ridiculous plot that makes no sense? This is a shark movie that can offer you something a lot different than the classic brutal-for-no-freaking-reason shark-attack movies.
“The Shallows” is the 2016 thriller movie directed by Jaume Collet-Serra whose movies were my obsession when I was a teenager. Jaume is the man responsible for several imaginative and innovative thriller movies including “House of Wax”, “Run All Night”, “Orphan”, “Non-Stop” and “Unknown”. He also seems to be a big fan of Liam Neeson since he chose him to play the main roles in three of his movies so far. And eleven years after his first incredible thriller movie “House of Wax”, which I’ve watched like thirty times already, he is back with another amazing film with a plotline that’s a bit different than we’ve been used to.
Nancy (Blake Lively) is a young surfer who decides to visit her mother’s favorite beach and do some surfing in its magnificently stunning big waves. But, when she makes the terrible decision to stand between a shark and its prey, she has to figure out a way to escape alive from its angry teeth. And, being left alone, her only weapon is her skilled brain filled with the medical education she thankfully has.
“The Shallows” entered my list of favorites immediately because its storyline was a lot different than the rest of the shark-attack movies I’ve watched so far. Watching someone trying to actually survive a shark attack alone in the middle of a bit of “shallow” waters, doing everything necessary to treat her wounds and trying to think at the same time a way to defeat that creature, is very original and truly interesting to watch. And if you are tired of silly “Jaws”-like shark attack movies full of bad cgis and shallow plots where the main characters are getting brutally murdered one after the other by sharks that never attack human beings in real life, you should try and experience the real agony that comes along with this one.
What can I say about the beauty Blake Lively? She is also the main element that makes this movie consistent and pretty awesome. After seeing her in movies like “The Age of Adaline” or “Savages”, it’s really interesting to watch her evolve through this film, which is by the way her first thriller movie. A gorgeous surfer woman in a bikini has the looks and the brains to battle with a shark with all that she can probably find in waters not that friendly towards a humans. Who wouldn’t want to watch that?
If you were looking for a film about sharks and you are sick of the usual boring and mainly mainstream shark attack movies, “The Shallows” is the perfect choice for you. Go check it out and prepare to not survive from an attack like this if you don’t have the skilled Blake by your side.
I’ll be back next Friday with another one of my favorite movies that you must watch.
Until then, leave your comments below and let us know what your thoughts on this movie are and if you enjoyed watching it.
