Friday Film: “The Maze Runner”

Given that the trailer of the third and final movie of this amazing movie series is already out, I’ve decided to inform you about the first one – also one of my favorite movies.

I’m talking about the 2014 action/sci-fi film “The Maze Runner” directed by Wes Ball, whose carrier in direction basically started with this movie series, since this was his first one. The movie is an adaptation of the book “The Maze Runner” by author James Dashner, which is slightly different from the film but the movie still succeeds in keeping the consistency of the story James had in mind and gives us the main idea around everything that’s going on in the book.

Thomas (Dylan O’ Brien) wakes up after his memories have been erased only to find himself in a strange community of thirty – also amnesiac like him – teenage boys, living in a place which is surrounded by enormous cement walls inside of which lies The Maze. The boys have learned to survive in this community by their own rules and once in a while they send one person inside the Maze to try and find out a possible escape route so that all of them can eventually get out of this place. But every night, The Maze rearranges itself, moving its walls and changing all the pathways inside of it so that they will have to try crossing it all over again the next day.

While the storyline might seem familiar to those who have watched movies like “The Hunger Games” or the “Divergent” movie series, it’s still a lot more different than them. The idea of escaping from a place which is like a prison for the characters but only if you can actually succeed in surviving a night through a huge labyrinth full of dangers and paths that are not familiar to you, is more than enough to get me hooked to this movie and impatient to see where this is all going to eventually go. And the fact that the end promises us another movie on the go, taking place in a completely different scenery than that of the first one, is what kept me wanting to watch more and see where the story goes.

The teenage element is something that you can’t possibly miss in this movie series. It’s what made this movie even more interesting and appealing to the audience. Because, let’s face it, it wouldn’t be that awesome if the casting was filled with mature and grown up characters who have the necessary intelligence, capability and the means needed to escape from a place like this. Therefore, when teenagers need to use their minds and skills to do the same thing, it’s undoubtedly more satisfying and worthwhile and it makes the whole expedition even more epic than it already is.

Since the series is coming to its end, it’s never too late to start with the first movie and continue to the second one while we are waiting for the third and last one to get released in the theaters in 2018. And especially if you are a fan of movie series like this, “The Maze Runner” is a must-watch movie for you.

I’ll be back next Friday with another one of my favorite movies that you must watch.

Until then, leave your comments below and let us know what your thoughts on this movie are and if you enjoyed watching it.
