Friday Film: “Predestination”

I don’t know why I hadn’t watched this awesome movie until a few days ago and, after being completely mind-blown and obsessed with it, I decided to fairly place it in my list of favorites and represent it to you, because it’s simply legendary.

We will travel back to 2014 when the sci-fi filmPredestination” was first released and everyone were posting on social media about how confused they got by this incredible masterpiece. The masterminds behind this unbelievably magnificent piece of art are the Australian writing-directing team “The Spierig Brothers” (Peter Spierig and Michael Spierig). They are known for their work in “Daybreakers”, “Undead” and the brand new 2017 movie that is being released today in the USA, “Saw: Legacy” a.k.a “Jigsaw”. But more surprising is the fact that this movie is based on the science-fiction short story “All You Zombies” written in 1958 by Robert A. Heinlein who claims to have written it in a day. “The Spierig Brothers” totally succeeded in perfectly translating the story from the page to the screen that, even after three years after its release, it still blew my mind.

The Barkeep, portrayed by Ethan Hawke, is a friendly guy who serves drinks at a bar in 1975. There he meets a strange guy who calls himself “The Unmarried Mother”, portrayed by Sarah Snook, who promises him “the best story he’d ever heard”. Meanwhile, New York is being terrorized by the Fizzle Bomber, who is still unknown and the authorities are having a hard time trying catching him.

The most important thing that makes this movie unbelievably brilliant, extraordinary and one-of-a-kind is the storyline. The confusion that came from the plot of this film when it got released was completely unfounded and out of place. Although there are many weird movies out there that make no sense until you fully analyze them or simply re-watch them, this film isn’t one of them. The plot is crystal clear and, despite being so different from anything that you’ve ever watched, it’s still a story that you need to watch. One minute you think you are watching a lovely drama movie, and the next one you are teleported in front of a screen which shows a completely different type of movie than the one you’ve been watching so far. And, in the end, they all come together so beautifully and smoothly and that’s what’s going to irreparably blow your mind.

The storyline may be awesome but the main factor that contributed in making it a masterpiece is the direction. I can’t get past the fact that this movie wouldn’t be so great and fully clear as to what it was intended to represent to you, but for the great directing work. These two incredible directors managed to successfully illustrate this complex plotline and blend everything together in such a beautiful way that made everything seem so inevitably normal. And, more importantly, they figured out a way to make Heinlein’s short story straightforward enough for the average viewer and they brought it to life with minor changes to the original. It’s because of the astounding direction that eventually everyone can fully understand the whole concept of the film and almost everybody, at the end of it, will want to go back and watch it again.

If you are as silly as I am and haven’t watched this incredible movie yet, it’s high time you did. Get ready to have your mind blown and become obsessed because “Predestination” will rock your entire world. Stop reading all the spoil sections on social media and experience it yourself because, I promise you, it’s legendary.

I’ll be back next Friday with another one of my favorite movies that you must watch.

Until then, leave your comments below and let us know what your thoughts on this movie are and if you enjoyed watching it.
