Friday Film: “Going in Style”

Have you ever thought what are you going to do with your lives when you will be a retired senior and wake up every day with less and less things to do and more and more bills to pay that your pension alone cannot cover?

These three gentlemen seem to have figured it all out in this hilarious comedy/crime movie of 2017 “Going in Style”. Director Zach Braff is responsible for this amazing remake of the original 1979 “Going in style” and he is known for “Wish I Was Here” and “Garden State”. The new “Going in Style” movie narrates the same story as the original one but it revolves around the everyday struggle people nowadays go through trying to recover from the economic collapse of 2008.

Joe Harding (Michael Caine), Willie Davis (Morgan Freeman) and Albert Garner (Alan Arkin) are three senior gentlemen, fed up with the amount of money they have to pay for their bills every month. One day they decide to rob the bank which make their lives miserable and that is when everything changes in their uneventful lives.

Starting from the incredible casting choice, I cannot restrain myself from pointing out just how awesome these three actors are. We have seen them in so many different movies, playing so many different roles and yet, when you put these three together in the same movie, the chemistry between them is remarkable. If it were not for these three actors, the movie would have not probably been so hilarious and I cannot help but wonder if it would have also been a disaster. Watching these three making conversation and acting on such funny scenes is an important element of how marvelous this movie is. And adding to this, you cannot move past the fact that these three are such professional actors with so much experience that they know exactly what to do, when to do it and how much of “it” you need or want to see in every kind of scene.

The second important factor that makes this movie fundamentally hilarious is the plot. Of course the original one had the same plot but this one does it with elements of the way of life we live today and that changes almost everything. That and the fact that this movie chose to relate the robbery act with the story of the characters in order to give it a reasonable explanation other than the simple ‘we are doing this for fun” reason, are the main differences between the remake film and the original one. And the most amusing thing that makes this film awesome is the fact that you get to watch three seniors trying to do the unthinkable, something that youngsters would obviously do better since they would have the mobility and the flexibility to do so, that these three obviously do not have; to rob a bank.

Watching “Going in Style” made my day and it is undoubtedly one of the most amusing, entertaining and hilarious movies I have ever watched. So, if you are feeling blue today and you want to forget your everyday problems and do something relaxing and enjoyable, try watching this film. I promise you it will make your day.

I’ll be back next Friday with another one of my favorite movies that you must watch.

Until then, leave your comments below and let us know what your thoughts on this movie are and if you enjoyed watching it.
