Friday Film: “The Loft”

Were you looking for a great movie to watch this weekend? Do not worry guys, I got your back – again. For this week’s suggestion, I have another great mystery film to introduce to you that will not disappoint you and I am sure you will love it even more than me.

This time I got the perfect mystery movie with the best cast suited for this plotline. “The Loft” is Erik Van Looy’s 2014 mystery film which is the American remake of the original 2008 Belgian film “Loft” by the same director. Erik Van Looy is also the creator of many great movies including “Shades” and “The Memory of a Killer”. In this second version of the “Loft” the storyline is pretty much the same. The only difference is that you get to watch the same story with the same characters portrayed by many great actors including Carl Urban, Wentworth Miller, James Marsden, Rhona Mitra and Rachael Taylor.

The story follows five married best friends who secretly share a penthouse loft in order to bring there their affairs and cheat on their wives. Only they are aware of the existence of this place and they are the only ones who own a key to it. When one day they discover the dead body of a blonde woman lying on the loft’s bed, their fantasy becomes a nightmare while they are trying to figure out who did this and whether the killer is in fact among them.

What makes this film one of my favourite ones is the great storyline that comes along with the whole mystery of it. Watching five best friends trying to point fingers at each other and suspecting everything and everyone is always fun to watch. And while you get sucked into the mystery of this movie, wishing you never get involved in a predicament like this, you yourself start to wonder whether it is indeed one of them who did the killing or someone outside their group. Because, let’s face it, a good mystery film is the one which makes you The Detective, desperately needing to solve the crime before the plot ends and solves it for you. This is exactly the point where this movie wanted to get you in the first place and it succeeds in doing that with flying colours.

I simply cannot continue without mentioning the undeniable fact that the major factor which makes all the above work like a clockwork is, of course, the great cast. “The Loft” stars a lot of amazing actors who are the main reason that I went ahead and watched this movie in the first place. And I was not disappointed at all. When you have a mystery to solve, you need the perfect suspects, the sketchy ones. Those who all can seem innocent and guilty at the same time but also have you love them to the point where you are blinded by your feelings and you do not have the clarity to recognize who is, in fact, a murderer. Instead of starting analyzing each one of them, I will simply ask you to re-read the names I quoted above. Do you really need more persuasion than that?

“The Loft” is one of the greatest mystery films I have ever watched and, on top of that, it manages to entertain you while getting you hooked to the story and obsessed with the characters. Watch it this weekend and try not to kill anyone in the meantime, please. My detective skills need some rest after this movie.

I’ll be back next Friday with another one of my favorite movies that you must watch.

Until then, leave your comments below and let us know what your thoughts on this movie are and if you enjoyed watching it.
