Friday Film: “Happy Death Day”

What would you do if you were forced to wake up on the same day everyday knowing that this is the day you will die? What if the person that was going to kill you is one of the people with whom you socialize every single one of these days? How would you really handle a situation like this?

In “Happy Death Day” it seems that the lead actress will not waste much of her time to find out what she must do. From director Christopher Landon known for his work in “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse”, “Burning Palms” and “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones”, “Happy Death Day” is his 2017 thriller movie that we were all waiting to get released and we were not disappointed of what we experienced. This film reminded me of the good old horror movies of the 90s and early 00s such as “Scream” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and this is enough reason for me to recommend it to you without even thinking about it twice.

College student girl Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) wakes up on her birthday only to die at the end of the day by a stranger who wears a weird mask. Then she wakes up again on the same day like nothing have happened but ends up dying again. After realizing and accepting what is going on, she will try to find out who is her killer in an attempt to stop this loop and continue living her normal life.

The first and foremost element which makes this film worth watching is the mysterious killer and his identity. After watching so many mystery films involving killers with masks and all and reading so many books centered on murders and police investigations, I still could not guess who the killer is until the very end. Furthermore, the whole concept about reliving the same day while having to do the investigation alone and dying so many times with so many different ways, is what makes this film even more interesting and challenging. Remember when we were trying to figure out who is behind the Scream Mask? The only thing that changes in this film is the mask, which is even more terrifying than the Scream one.

Another great element this film offers is the comic one. Because, when you are in a situation like this, the best thing you can do is calm down and enjoy it especially if you know that you might die for good at some point. Actually this is why the movie does not fail to keep you on pins and needles throughout the whole storyline. It does not have meaningless conversations that might get you bored and you are finding yourself constantly in the same situation Tree is while feeling that you are also running out of time. Plus, the movie manages to get you attached to all the characters through this eternal loop in such a way that you will not be able to forget who is who in order to put the pieces together and solve the mystery, if you are a mystery freak like me.

This is a really enjoyable film that you can easily watch with the company of your friends. And if you are a fun of the old teen slasher movies, you should definitely watch this one. Enjoy “Happy Death Day” and be careful who you trust. You never know who might try to destroy you and why.

I’ll be back next Friday with another one of my favorite movies that you must watch.

Until then, leave your comments below and let us know what your thoughts on this movie are and if you enjoyed watching it.
