Friday Film: “Coherence”

What would be worse: not being able to understand what is happening to you or being able to figure it out but the explanation is something that the human brain cannot comprehend or accept that it is even close to anything doable or natural?

In the 2013 mystery film “Coherence” the latter is what the characters are forced to face and I am pretty sure they would rather experience the first choice. And while James Ward Byrkit seemed very confident when he decided to direct his first movie, he was right to do so because “Coherence” had a huge success and it deserved it big time. That is even more surprising considering its cast was not filled with big Hollywood names and there was not enough advertising for this awesome film.

Em (Emily BaldoniGhosts of Girlfriends Past, The Lost Tribe) along with her husband Kevin (Maury SterlingThe A-Team, Smokin’ Aces, Homeland) are invited to a dinner party with six of their friends on an evening when a comet is passing overhead. As the night unfolds, strange things begin to happen which make the eight people to start questioning and researching various phenomena and weird theories.

When I chose to watch this movie some years back, I had no clue what to expect or what the storyline is about. Not knowing anything made the film even more surprising and exciting for me since there is no doubt that the whole storyline is unfolding in just the right way for the viewers to completely comprehend what is happening piece by piece. On top of that, we are talking about a situation, which if it is not explained in the right way, it might cause confusion and sentence the film to face a complete failure. While this is accomplished perfectly splendid throughout the entire film, the even greater achievement is how unique this story is and for me it is a movie that should be watched by everyone because of its beauty and originality. Plus, despite all that, it has an interesting closure which is something that is essential for a story like this in my opinion.

In addition to the storyline, I mentioned above the cast which is full of almost strange faces to the audience and yet these guys were the ones who delivered this great story in such a beautiful way that it made it even more unique than it already is. Watching eight different people sitting inside one single room trying to make sense of all the weird stuff they are experiencing, is already challenging but to actually see them going through all the changes and showing their true colours is something really interesting and enjoyable. Had it not been for these eight actors, this story would have been pointless, boring and completely destroyed. However, I cannot get past the fact that the story and the actors were the only things this movie needed to be a success and immediately enter my list of favourites.

If you were looking for a different movie than the ones you have already watched over and over again in many different versions and with various titles, this is the right one for you. Watch the story of “Coherence” unfold in front of your eyes and prepare to get mind-blown and pleasantly surprised by a not-so-well-known-movie-title which deserves more attention than it ever got.

I’ll be back next Friday with another one of my favorite movies that you must watch.

Until then, leave your comments below and let us know what your thoughts on this movie are and if you enjoyed watching it.
