Friday Film: “The Secret of Marrowbone”

When it comes to thriller films, I think I am the most suited person to ask for a recommendation. Although, this time, I was very surprised with this one because it was so much better than it looked like when I was reading the plot summary resulting in blowing my mind.

The 2017 thriller/drama film “The Secret of Marrowbone” is made for one purpose and one purpose only: to confuse you until it throws the whole truth in your face when you are least expecting it. Director Sergio G. Sánchez did an incredible job in his first TV Movie after having worked as a writer in some few other films like “The End”, “Palm Trees in the Snow” and the incredibly successful “The Orphanage”.  This one is his best directing job, in my opinion, and to top it all off, he also wrote the script for this one, which is the best thing this movie explores and has to offer you, mixed with some very good horror, which is there to offer you some worthy goose bumps.

Jack (George MacKay,  “Peter Pan”, “12.22.63”, “Captain Fantastic) is a young man who, along with his three younger siblings, chose to keep their mother’s death a secret in order to remain together. However, they find themselves plagued by a sinister presence, which haunts the manor house in which they live.

What is wrong with this family and what exactly happened before they end up in this house? These are two of the questions that will come to your mind the minute you step foot in this amazing film and this was exactly the main purpose this movie had. Moreover, this is the kind of movie that makes you question everything and start making theories from the first minute to the last and yet it still manages to surprise you because of the way in manages to get you connected with these four children and the way of life they chose to live by. On top of that, if you think for a second that you will figure out the truth about this family before it is revealed to you, you are completely mistaken and I challenge you to watch it and prove me wrong in the comments below while you are in the middle of it.

On the other hand, you have this great cast, which makes you become so attached to each one of them despite the fact that they are such young actors with less experience than other great Hollywood names. Furthermore, let me take a moment and appreciate the young main actor who needs, without any doubt, some more recognition and credit for his great performance in this movie than he has already got. George MacKay is one of the reasons this movie made it in my list of favourites because he simply managed to make me like him from the very first second he appeared on my screen and had me feel sympathy and some connection with him because this is exactly what he should have done anyway. Do not get me wrong, I loved the other three children too but this love came because of MacKay, who made me love them through his astonishing connection he had with each one of them.

The Secret of Marrowbone” is a surprisingly amazing thriller movie that not many other movies of its kind can compete with, at least among those of the 21st century. Take my word for it and watch it this weekend while I will go watch one more time myself.

I will be back next Friday with another one of my favorite movies that you must watch.

Until then, leave your comments below and let us know what your thoughts on this movie are and if you enjoyed watching it.
