For those who loved “The Invisible Guest” a.k.a. “Contratiempo”, this is a film stepping into its shoes without failing and delivers you one of the best mind-blowing mysteries ever made.
“Ittefaq” is a 2017 hindi mystery film revolving around a crime that needs to be solved. Abhay Chopra’s first directing job is by far one of the best mysteries of its kind with great cinematography and actors that are that good, you cannot go near the truth unless it is revealed to you. Even though it is similar to two of Oriol Paulo’s films from the way the truth behind the crime is unveiled throughout the film, it still has its uniqueness minding the story and the way Chopra chose to tell it.
Detective Dev Verma (Akshaye Khanna) is investigating a double murder case that has only two witnesses, also the prime suspects. Vikram Sethi (Sidharth Malhotra) is an acclaimed writer who has a completely different narrative about the events of that fateful night from Maya Sinha (Sonakshi Sinha), a young homemaker. Is any of the two telling the truth and who?
When it comes to mysteries, you know all you need to do is to simply read my “Friday Film” and choose from the ones I have recommended to you. This one is no different and most of all, it has the best storyline I have ever watched in any thriller movie involving crimes. Two suspects are describing the same night in two very different ways, describing different events and narrating two different times those events occurred. More importantly, you cannot decide which one is truthful between the two stories, not even slightly get a hint of who is most trustful and who is not. Both stories seem possible to have happened taking under consideration and fully accepting the fact that either of them might have done it. However, there is always the possibility no one of these two had done it, which makes it even more confusing and hard to find the truth.
This brings me to the next thing that makes this storyline worth watching: The actors. Either both of them are very good liars in real life or are just the best actors, at least when it comes to these kinds of films. On one hand, you have Malhotra saying a very convincing story about what happened that night while at the same time, you have Sinha describing the events of that night in a way that also seems truthful and have a high possibility of having occurred exactly as she says it have. Consequently, there are no better actors than these two capable of delivering this incredible mystery story in a better way.
Are you in the mood of a great mystery film involving the investigation of not one, but two crimes? Watch “Ittefaq” this weekend with your friends or even without them and try figuring out who is telling the truth, if there is someone actually not lying about it, and what exactly happened that unfortunate night.
I will be back next Friday with another one of my favorite movies that you must watch.
Until then, leave your comments below and let us know what your thoughts on this movie are and if you enjoyed watching it.
