Friday Film: “Hereditary”

A weird family with secrets and a creepy behavior is, indeed, the best film you can watch this weekend. Unless you are too scared to try out a movie filled with psychos, including its director.

The 2018 horror film going by the name “Hereditary” looked horrifying in its trailer, and if you think the movie itself will not be like this, think again. It is also the directing and writing debut of Ari Aster who is probably a psycho in real life judging by how scary this film is. He did a great job with everything in the movie – apart from a mistake, where you see a candle with no flame at the beginning of the scene and then it is lit. However, from the cinematography to the creepy story of the movie, his work is undoubtedly one that will keep you up at night.

Annie (Toni Collette,  “Imperium,” “xXx: Return of Xander Cage,” “The Sixth Sense) is a mother of two children who loses her mother right before everything starts to collapse. What is really going on with this family? What are we missing? Is this a ghost story or a drama film revolved around the tragic incidents happening to one single family?

The film is so creepy that you cannot even understand why or how. It has something disturbing that will give you some goosebumps from time to time. Its atmosphere is questionable, even with the excellent cinematography, you still cannot shake that feeling of uneasiness it gives you.  And, that is actually exactly what this film needs to establish its entire story. By the way, the plot of “Hereditary” is brilliant. Even after the movie, you feel like you need someone to tell you exactly what happened. And, if you do try to search for answers, you will find out things that you missed while watching the film plus some fascinating trivia about how the film was made.

Of course, nothing of the above would matter if it were not for the main protagonists of this movie. You can make a perfect film technical-wise, but if the actors are performing bad, your film is trash. Toni Collette’s astounding performance instantly connects you with her family and the drama she is going through. And while she is the main reason you sympathize with the characters of the movie, her children are also right on point. Milly Shapiro is the creepiest child I have ever seen in a film, maybe after that horrifying “Esther” from the “Orphan.” And Alex Wolff has some scary moments of his own as well.

Hereditary” is the best horror film of 2018 so far hands down. Watch it and get mind-blown by this unpredictable creepy story.

I will be back next Friday with another one of my favorite movies that you must watch.

Until then, leave your comments below and let us know what your thoughts on this movie are and if you enjoyed watching it.
